What Should I Do Next Weekend?

I will be in Portland next Friday and have to get to Cincinnati Sunday night. Options:
  1. Oregon exploration
  2. Washington exploration
  3. Vancouver (five hours from Portland)
Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

well, if i still lived there, i'd throw together a game. but i don't so...

here's some things *I* would do if I was there...

1. hit up Coffeehouse NW on Burnside and 19th. ask for matt brown - tell him I sent you. He'll rock you a bad-ass cappuccino.

2. then go down the street (east on burnside) to powell's city of books. biggest book store i've ever seen. you could get lost for hours.

3. from there... i don't know. i could just walk around pdx all day. but if you're not into loafing around the city... the oregon coast is less than a 2-hour drive away. my warning is that if you do that, don't expect you'll get back sunday afternoon in 2 hours... traffic back to the city is pretty crazy.

4. the church i was on staff at is in vancouver (washington, just a few minutes from downtown pdx), they have sunday am services (compassv.org). it's a pretty great place.

that's my short list. the coffeehouse is the one i'd be sure to catch. if you can't find it, look for a stumptown coffee, there's only 3... but they are A-MAZ-ING.

then call me if your travels come towards denver.

As someone who lived in Portland, I wouldn't recommend driving to B.C. There's waaay too much stuff to do in Portland.

Totally recommend Powell's. I'd also check out the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, on either side of the state line http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/columbia/

Maybe within an hour's drive on the Washington state side is Mt. St. Helens. That area is beautiful and has recovered well from the eruption.

i agree about not driving to BC... especially considering that you have to go through seattle, and there's tons of stuff to do in seattle as well.

mt. st. helens is rather nice, you can go to the johnson ridge observatory and get a great view of the volcanic crater.
