So a Mom and Her Boys Walk into a Dentist's Office...

"So, the dentist said that this summer, we would start braces with (our eldest son). It will cost fifty-seven hundred."

$5,700.

I used to dream that I would get braces so I could be a cool braces-kid. My wife had braces, now her bottom teeth are as crooked as New Orleans City Councilman. I never had braces, and I have somehow survived.

Do we then move forward and get braces for our twelve-year old? Please answer and defend your position.

Good teeth are critical in life. Just do it.

CC, thanks for your comment on my newly regenerated poker blog.

Now, to the question at hand, as a person who had braces pretty much all of my adolescence (really bad buck teeth; had braces from 9-16) I recommend doing it. Bad teeth kill confidence, and if it is a serious problem, get it fixed. If you're unsure if it is serious, get a second opinion.

But also make sure your kid wears a retainer at night after he gets them off, that's where most people go wrong.

On a 12 year old no. On a 14/15 year old yes.

Things are still falling out and moving around at 12. Unless the kid has severe problems with teeth behind teeth and such, save up for a couple of years.

Justification: Your child will save more money than the braces cost (possibly even in future value) in dental bills later in life (35+) if his teeth are aligned now and stay aligned through out.
